Vodafone and Nokia sets a new 100 gigabit fiber record
The British multinational telecommunications company Vodafone and the Finnish electronics company Nokia has set a record of 100 gigabit per second (Gb/s) with passive optical network (PON) technology delivering network that is 10 times faster than any available network in a single wavelength.
Bell Labs, Nokia’s renowned subsidiary has provided innovations for the trial, including digital signal processing (DSP) techniques.
There is a huge demand for broadband connectivity exponentially in terms of service types, number of connected devices and the bandwidth consumed.
Vodafone, having to be the pioneer of access technologies and one of the first operators to trial TWDM-PON with Nokia.
Vodafone has the largest next-generation access network capability in Europe, Covering around 140 million homes.
The Head of Fixed Access Centre of Excellence at Vodafone, Gavin Young said:
“100G PON has 40 times the capacity of today’s GPON networks, and 10 times the capacity of XGS-GPON, so it will help us keep ahead of the demand curve,”
“In addition to ultra-high speeds, the technology supports our vision of highly efficient and adaptable next-generation networks,”
“100G PON enables flexible rates, and works by grouping modems using a technique similar to the one we already use in our cable networks,”
“so this experience can help us to better evaluate and exploit this new PON technology.”
The chief technology officer of fixed networks division, Stefaan Vanhastel said:
Nokia always pushes the potential of fiber access so that capacity stays ahead of the uncompromising demand of the connected world. Nokia is also delighted to introduce 100G technology with Vodafone.
