Vietnam’s Bamboo Airways to sign $2 billion deal with GE

Vietnam’s airline company Bamboo Airways to sign $2 billion deal with General Electric (GE) for GEnx engines to power Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft according to the Chief Executive Officer of Bamboo Airways, Dang Tat Thang.

This deal will be signed in the United States in the presence of Vietnam President Nguyen Xuan Phuc during his trip to New York City this week to attend the United Nations General Assembly.

The General Electric (GEnx) engines will be delivered by 2022 and it will be used on the airlines wide body Dreamliner to operate non-stop routes between Vietnam and the United States.

With a mission of connecting tourist regions in Southeast Asian nation Bamboo Airways began flying in the year 2019, now is planning to start commercial flights to the U.S next year after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Chief Executive Officer of Bamboo Airways Dang Tat Thang, said:

“This new signing agreement will be an important milestone for the airline to expand its transcontinental flight network, connecting Vietnam with medium- and long-range markets,”

Dang Tat Thang also said that the airline is also in discussions with CFM International Inc., the joint venture between General Electric and France’s Safran SA, for engines and engine- maintenance support for A321neo aircraft.

To expand its horizon in U.S Bamboo Airways is expected to sign cooperation agreements with Los Angeles International Airport and San Francisco International Airport and to open a U.S. representative office. The airlines also has plans to expand its international routes to Germany, U.K, and Australia.

Bamboo Airways had signed a deal with Boeing to purchase 10 wide-body 787-9 Dreamliners in February 2019, adding to a previous transaction struck in June the year prior for 20 787 Dreamliners. At the time, Bamboo Airways said it may also consider purchasing 25 narrow-body Boeing 737 Max planes.
