Press Trust of India Partners with Meta’s 3PFC in India

Indian news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) joined Meta’s third-party fact-checking partnership (3PFC) programme on Monday, with an objective to identify, review and rate content as misinformation across the social media company’s applications including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

With electioneering for the LokSabha polls having intensified, said the newspaper publication, Meta announced the onboarding of a news agency, as the tech giant seeks to expand its 3PFC network.

“This collaboration will strengthen the fight against misinformation in India’s digital landscape and empower users to navigate the online world with greater confidence,” said Vijay Joshi, Chief Executive Officer of PTI.

In February, Meta said the Facebook news option, which highlights news from the US and Australia, will be decommissioned in early April.

Meta also said it will work with 3PFC accredited by organizations like the non-partisan International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) to review and rate app-based misinformation that becomes viral.

Since 2016, Instagram’s parent has invested over $100 million in programs that help fact-checking efforts to combat the spread of misinformation and it will continue to invest in this area.

This fact-checking effort aims to uncover and address spreading misinformation, particularly apparent hoaxes with no basis. The program is not intended to interfere with individual expression, opinions, and discussion, clearly satirical or humorous content, or business issues.

Meta may take several actions on content or accounts that violate the policies, fact-checkers are not accountable for these actions, said the Facebook parent.
