PhonePe-owned Indus Appstore said its application was installed by over one million users on Monday, within just a month of its launch.
Indus Appstore has seen a wide range of app categories gain popularity with finance, games, social, entertainment, tools, communication and shopping leading the download statistics, said the company, while 45% of users come from tier-two cities, suggesting broad appeal beyond large metros.
The company said mobile app store formed important original equipment manufacturer (OEM) ties with Nokia and Lava and is in talks with numerous additional major smartphone makers.
Some popular applications catering to a wide variety of requirements, like food delivery, entertainment, and fashion are available to download on the Indus Appstore including Swiggy, Zomato, and Disney+ Hotstar.
Earlier this month, some Indian-based applications were removed from Google Play Store, including the widely known Matrimony.com, Info Edge’s 99acres, and Naukri.com. The removal was the consequence of a dispute about Google’s service fee payments for in-app transactions.
In late February, PhonePe in competition with Google’s Play Store launched its Indus Appstore to create a more competitive and localized mobile app store ecosystem in India.
Indus Appstore is considered to be a valuable addition to India’s digital landscape for several compelling reasons like localization and cultural relevance, reducing dependency on global giants, while global app stores like the Google Play Store and Apple App Store have been dominating the market.
