OpenAI to Enter Asia with Office in Japan

Parent of ChatGPT OpenAI, on Sunday, said it is expanding its venture into Asia with a new office in Tokyo, Japan, with an aim to collaborate with the Japanese government, local businesses, and research institutions to develop safe AI tools that serve Japan’s needs and unlock new opportunities.

AI assisting firm said it appointed Tadao Nagasaki as President of OpenAI Japan, where he will lead commercial and market engagement efforts as well as build a local team that will advance global affairs.

OpenAI said it will also build close relations with leading businesses including Daikin, Rakuten, and Toyota to automate complex business processes, assist in data analysis, and optimize internal reporting using ChatGPT.

At the initial stage, it would provide access to a GPT-4 custom model specifically optimized for the Japanese language, said OpenAI. The custom model offers cost-effective, faster and improved performance in translating and summarizing Japanese text.

The GPT-4 custom model optimized for the Japanese language offers improved performance in Japanese text and operates up to 3x faster than the GPT-4 Turbo.

“We believe AI will accelerate work by empowering people to be more creative and productive, while also delivering broad value to current and new industries that have yet to be imagined,” said Sam Altman, Executive Chief of OpenAI.
