Nokia Collaborates with Intel Technology for Energy Efficiency in 5G Networks

Telecommunication firm Nokia collaborated with Intel on Wednesday, to utilize the chip maker’s technology Xeon processors and power management software for energy efficiency improvements in 5G networks that will power Nokia’s cloud-native 5G Core solutions.

The Finland-based company said the collaboration combines both companies’ innovation and technology to reduce electricity usage as well as cost network to communication service providers (CSPs), meaning companies that offer communications and information-related services.

The telecommunications operator said, in testing demonstrations, it achieved about 40% runtime power savings using its cloud-native 5G Core, integrated with Intel infrastructure power manager (IPM) software and 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors while maintaining key network performance metrics.

The firm also said it intends to deliver these energy savings capabilities to the market by the second half of 2024 starting with Nokia’s Cloud Packet Core.

“Network data and computation usage only continues to grow, with the clear implication that has for continued energy demand growth, what we are doing today demonstrates not only superior software and technology but delivering on our broader commitments to cut carbon emissions across value chains,” said Marcelo Madruga, Head of Technology at Nokia.

Earlier today, Nokia also joined forces with companies like SK Telecom, NTT and DOCOMO to develop the 6G AI-native air interface (AI-AI), a next-generation technology that could boost network performance while increasing energy efficiency.
