Facebook parent company Meta, has unveiled the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants, a new initiative providing up to USD 2 million to support innovative AI applications addressing global challenges. This programme continues Meta’s tradition of empowering organisations with funding to leverage open-source AI for social good.
The Llama 3.1 Impact Grants programme invites proposals from organisations worldwide, particularly those focused on economic development, science, innovation, and public service. Selected recipients can receive up to USD 500,000, with winners to be announced early next year.
“We’re inspired by the diverse projects we’ve seen developers undertake around the world to positively impact their communities by building with Llam,” said Kojo Boakye, Vice President of Public Policy, Africa, the Middle East, and Turkiye, Meta.
“We believe AI has more potential than any other modern technology to increase human productivity, creativity, and quality of life—and to accelerate economic growth while unlocking progress in medical and scientific research,” he added.
Meta will support applicants with regional events, including virtual sessions, hackathons, and workshops, in locations such as Egypt, Hong Kong, India, and Saudi Arabia. Participants will receive technical guidance and mentorship and may qualify for additional awards of up to USD 100,000.
The window for applications on the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants is open from August 5 to November 22, 2024. Meta encourages eligible organisations to submit proposals to harness AI for significant social impact.
