History made as Rishi Sunak becomes elected the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
“I will unite our country, not with words, but with action”, Rishi Sunak swears in as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, after his predecessor Liz Truss resigned.
Rishi Sunak, who was selected as prime minister at the age of 42, has surpassed his former boss David Cameron, who held the record at 43. Mr Sunak was initially elected as an MP in 2015, representing Richmond in North Yorkshire. He advanced fast, becoming finance minister — or chancellor — under Boris Johnson in February 2020.
He left the cabinet in July, citing the fact that he believed his economic policies were “fundamentally too divergent” from those of Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Some of the former PM’s allies won’t forget how crucial the action was in getting Mr Johnson fired.
In September, he lost to Liz Truss; nevertheless, six weeks later, she resigned. Mr Sunak quickly and early gained the backing of his fellow MPs in the most recent leadership race. Long before the deadline, he received the 100 nominations he needed, including those from MPs who had previously supported Truss or Boris Johnson.
As a practising Hindu, he has stated that one of his finest professional experiences was setting ceremonial diyas (oil lamps) outside 11 Downing Street when chancellor. His appointment as PM coincided with the day that millions of people celebrated Diwali. There was a traditional Hindu crimson wristband, worn for luck and protection, when he posed on the steps of 10 Downing Street for the first time as the leader of the UK, a traditional Hindu red wristband, symbolic of luck and protection, was visible on his wrist.
Rishi Sunak’s new cabinet
In a flurry of announcements on Tuesday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak laid out his new cabinet, underscoring his aim for stability in one of Britain’s most tumultuous political periods by appointing primarily well-known individuals who had previously served in Conservative Party administrations.
To fill the most senior positions, Mr Sunak turned to parliamentarians who had previously held key positions, including a number of people who served as cabinet members during his predecessor Liz Truss’s seven-week term.
After assuming the position of prime minister for a few hours, Rishi Sunak has chosen his new government. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, and Defence Secretary Ben Wallace are among the ministers he has remained in their current positions.
Wednesday will mark the first time that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will meet with his newly selected cabinet. Sunak assumed office on Tuesday with a pledge to correct his predecessor’s faults and stabilise the economy.
Does it matter? UK’s new PM richer than the King!
There is no doubt that Mr Sunak is significantly wealthier than the majority of people. He and his wife Akshata Murty are reported to be worth more than £730 million as a couple, surpassing King Charles III’s personal fortune on the double. The ability of Mr Sunak’s critics to comprehend the scope of the cost-of-living squeeze on struggling households has been called into question.
At a time when millions of Britons are battling with a cost-of-living problem and the country as a whole is experiencing turmoil due to the failing economy, this will mark the first time in history that those living in No. 10 Downing Street will be wealthier than the queen in Buckingham Palace.
The financial situation of Mr Sunak and his family was closely scrutinised in April, and his wife’s tax affairs as the daughter of Indian billionaire and co-founder of the IT services behemoth Infosys, Narayana Murthy, came under close investigation. Infosys, with its headquarters in Bangalore, reported earnings of over $11.8 billion (£9 billion) in 2019, $12.8 billion in 2020, and $13.5 billion in 2021. Ms Murty is listed as owning 0.9% of Infosys in the most recent annual report of the corporation.
In an effort to reduce political pressure on her husband, she declared in April that she would begin paying UK tax on this income. Since being named prime minister, Mr Sunak’s wealth and tax troubles have once again been a hot topic. He has remained mum regarding his own riches and claims he has never benefited from funds based in tax havens.
