Bill Gates worries that manufacturing could wane climate goals

The American business magnate and philanthropist Bill Gates worries that manufacturing could wane climate goals , he believes that there is currently no way to make steel or cement without releasing climate warning emissions.

Bill Gates says that neither investors nor governments are looking hard to solve that problem.

That’s the sector that bothers me the most,” Gates said in a video interview with Reuters ahead of the publication this week of his book, “How to Avoid a Climate Disaster.”

The millionaire turned philanthropist has invested around $2billion towards the development of clean technologies, but mostly in electricity generation and storage and not in manufacturing.

Construction materials like cheap staple steel and cement contributes a third of global greenhouse gas emissions.

This makes manufacturing more polluting than the transportation or power sectors, which receives far more attention in investments and policies,

As the global population is increasing manufacturing sector is set to grow and countries further develop.

The philanthropist said that people need basic shelter, certainly in developing countries and it is unlikely that we stop building buildings.

He plans to impel for more innovation and research at U.N climate conference in Glasgow, “The idea is to get innovation, including R&D, onto the agenda not just looking at the easy stuff.”

In 2015 United Nations climate talks in Paris, gates helped to launch a global initiative called Mission innovation along with then president Barack Obama. Francois Hollande, France’s president To link private sector with national governments.

He also said there should be diversity in the solutions so the governments do not end up duplicating efforts.

The manufacturing plants may be able to reduce their emissions by plugging into an electricity grid run on renewable energy, as it will not resolve all the issues with emissions from Cement making and Steel, Both industries release carbon dioxide as a by-product.
