E-commerce giant Amazon, on Wednesday, said it will launch numerous small third-party Just Walk Out stores in 2024 than before, doubling the number of third-party outlets with technology this year.
Dash Carts will soon be available at all Amazon Fresh stores in the United States and specific third-party outlets too, said the company and added, that it has planned future iterations of Dash Cart to enhance the overall shopping experience.
“Just Walk Out” leverages cameras and sensors to automatically detect items a customer takes from shelves. When finished shopping, customers can simply leave the store without needing to stop at a register.
Earlier this month, news reports circulated data stating Amazon employed about 1000 workers in India to oversee people shopping and review purchases at stores using Just Walk Out.
Dilip Kumar, Vice President at AWS Applications responded to the claims, “The erroneous reports that Just Walk Out technology relies on human reviewers watching from afar is untrue.”
“Most AI systems, including the underlying ML models behind these technologies, are continuously improved by annotating synthetic (AI generated) and real shopping data,” he added.
Kumar also verified the information by stating the associates did not watch videos of shoppers to generate receipts, and said, it is not different from any other AI system that places a high value on accuracy, where human reviewers are common.
Amazon said it has a strong conviction that Just Walk Out technology will be the future in stores that have a curated selection where customers can pop in, grab the small number of items they need, and simply walk out.
