ADNOC, Masdar, XRG & Microsoft: Strategic AI Partnership Accelerates Energy Transformation

ADNOC, Masdar, XRG, and Microsoft announced a landmark strategic agreement to accelerate the deployment of artificial intelligence across ADNOC’s comprehensive value chain.

Consequently, the partnership delivers next-generation sustainable energy solutions supporting Microsoft’s worldwide artificial intelligence and data centre expansion initiatives. The collaboration announcement took place at the ENACT Majlis in Abu Dhabi, strategically timed ahead of ADIPEC 2025.

Building on ADNOC and Microsoft’s long-established partnership framework, the expanded agreement notably incorporates Masdar and XRG. Both organisations bring critical expertise in developing sustainable energy projects and essential infrastructure supporting Microsoft’s aggressive global artificial intelligence and data centre growth trajectory. This structural expansion substantially strengthens institutional commitment across all four entities.

The agreement establishes critical operational mechanisms that drive the deployment of autonomous systems. Specifically, ADNOC and Microsoft will co-develop and deploy artificial intelligence agents systematically across ADNOC’s value chain. These autonomous systems will drive operational autonomy, unlock measurable efficiency gains, and substantially minimise emissions. Furthermore, Microsoft will provide advanced artificial intelligence tools, comprehensive upskilling programmes, and strategic workforce development initiatives. Additionally, both companies collaborate to build a joint innovation ecosystem and develop transformative energy sector solutions.

ADNOC’s historical leadership in artificial intelligence deployment demonstrates proven capability execution. Notably, ADNOC became the first energy company to roll out generative artificial intelligence enterprise-wide in November 2023, leveraging Microsoft Copilot technology across the organisation. Subsequently, more than 40,000 employees completed sophisticated artificial intelligence training programmes. Moreover, utilisation rates consistently exceeded 90 per cent. Remarkably, productivity gains have accumulated to exceed 70,000 hours per month, representing substantial operational value.

Artificial intelligence continues to fundamentally reshape how organisations systematically create and enhance value across industries. With Microsoft’s partnership, the coalition unlocks new AI opportunities, improves performance, and future-proofs operations.

The partnership reinforces Abu Dhabi’s established position as a global energy innovation hub. Together, ADNOC’s industrial leadership, Microsoft’s digital expertise, and Masdar and XRG’s clean energy capabilities combine to advance the artificial intelligence era responsibly and sustainably. The collaboration demonstrates institutional commitment to dual transformation objectives: deploying artificial intelligence to optimise energy systems whilst delivering clean energy infrastructure to power the growth of artificial intelligence.

Electricity demand dynamics underscore the partnership’s critical strategic importance. Data centre electricity consumption will quadruple substantially by 2040, according to sector forecasts. Consequently, urgent action remains necessary to meet the escalating demand across diversified energy portfolios comprehensively. The partnership positions participating entities to proactively address these infrastructure challenges through integrated solutions that combine renewable energy deployment with artificial intelligence-driven efficiency improvements.

This expanded agreement successfully builds upon ADNOC and Microsoft’s existing 2024 collaboration framework. Previously, both companies, alongside Masdar, signed a Strategic Collaboration Agreement to advance artificial intelligence and low-carbon initiatives. That foundational partnership explored renewable energy applications from Masdar, powering Microsoft datacentres whilst applying artificial intelligence towards carbon capture, low-carbon ammonia, and hydrogen project development targeting emissions reduction.

The convergence of energy and artificial intelligence creates unprecedented opportunity landscapes for institutional innovation. Energy providers increasingly recognise that AI success fundamentally depends on consistently reliable, sustainable, carbon-free access to electricity. This recognition has driven executive leadership to prioritise grid capacity development and workforce readiness as integral strategic components rather than peripheral operational functions.

The ENACT Majlis forum brought together over 100 global leaders from the energy, technology, investment, and government sectors. This gathering reinforced Abu Dhabi’s institutional leadership, shaping comprehensive futures in energy, technology, and investment. The forum explored integrated solutions that unleash the potential of artificial intelligence, turbo-charging sustainable growth and global prosperity simultaneously. Leaders collaboratively acknowledged the requirements for electricity infrastructure, the imperatives for renewable energy deployment, and the necessities for workforce development.

Strategic cross-sector collaboration frameworks continue proving essential for overcoming deployment obstacles effectively. Energy and technology organisations have historically operated in isolated operational silos; however, current circumstances demand urgent coordinated partnership approaches.
