Mercedes-Benz Employs Apollo, Apptronik’s Humanoid Robot

Robot maker Apptronik’s Apollo, commercial humanoid robot was recently employed by luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz, in its manufacturing facilities to empower the staff with customized technology.

In late August, Apptronik launched Apollo, to operate in a warehouse and manufacturing unit and transform industrial workforce. Apollo being modular, has the flexibility to be mounted in any mobility station or fully mobile with legs.

The robot was designed based on the experience and expertise in building over 10 robots including NASA’s Valkyrie robot.

Mercedes-Benz will utilize Apollo humanoid robots in logistics to deliver assembly kits to the production line for workers to assemble, while also inspecting the components, said Apptronik and added, the robot will also be used to deliver the totes of kitted parts later in the manufacturing process.

“This is a new frontier and we want to understand the potential both for robotics and automotive manufacturing to fill labor gaps in areas such as low-skill, repetitive, and physically demanding work and to free up our highly skilled team members on the line to build the world’s most desirable cars,” said Jörg Burzer, Executive at Mercedes-Benz Group’s Production, Quality & Supply Chain Management.

On Monday, the firm collaborated with NVIDIA, a computer hardware manufacturing firm, to enhance humanoid robot learning, where Apollo will integrate NVIDIA’s Project GR00T, a general-purpose foundation model for robot learning, to make a robot-augmented future.
