RWE Initiates Construction of UK Solar Farms

Power generator RWE, on Wednesday, initiated the construction of its solar farms in the United Kingdom, which includes seven projects representing 330 megawatts (MW).

The solar project is launched after the acquisition of JBM Solar, UK-based renewables developer. The deal included 6.1 gigawatts (GW), split into 3.8 GW capacity of solar and 2.3 GW of battery storage and development projects.

RWE said it looks to reduce carbon emissions as well as aims to join forces within the local communities by investing £645,000 ($825,987) to support local jobs and opportunities for local businesses.

The firm said one of the seven sites will be fully operational by the end of 2024, which will be capable of generating the electricity to supply 140,000 UK homes.

“The deployment of these seven new projects represents a significant milestone for RWE as we grow and diversify our clean energy portfolio through solar and battery power, in one of our most strategically important markets,” said Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe and Australia.

“We aim to maximize the generation potential of these sites for the UK; with a national target to increase solar capacity five-fold by 2035 and similar for battery storage,” said Wünschel and added, “Our projects will play a key role in helping ensure the UK decarbonises its power grid and achieves its challenging net-zero targets.”

In November, the renewable energy firm said it aims to accelerate the energy transition in South Korea through promotion of offshore wind along with contributing to ramping up hydrogen economy, through a partnership with Hyundai Motor subsidiary Hyundai Engineering & Construction.
