Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), on Monday, carried out the first successful flight test of the Agni-5 missile, a homegrown weapon that uses multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle (MIRV) technology.
Mission Divyastra was an aerial test carried out from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, in the state of Odisha, said Press Information Bureau (PIB). The bureau also said the mission tracked and monitored several re-entry vehicles while aiming at different telemetry and radar stations, successfully completing the intended parameters.
This development highlighted India’s growing defense capability. The Agni-5 weapon system, with its in-house aviation and electronics systems and high-precision sensor packages, made the re-entry vehicles hit their targets with remarkable accuracy.
The Agni-5 was tested with three warheads with a range reduced to around 3,500 kilometers (km) since it was the maiden MIRV flight, reported Times of India (TOI).
“The first flight test of Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology is a testament to India’s indigenous defence capabilities and innovative spirit,” said Jagdeep Dhankhar, Vice-President of India.
In October 2021, the Agni-5 surface-to-surface ballistic missile was launched at around 7.50 pm. The missile had a three-stage solid-fuel engine that allowed it to hit targets up to 5,000 km away, with extreme precision.
Founded in 1958, DRDO is the research and development (R&D) wing of the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. The organization was formed with a vision to empower India with advanced defence technologies and a mission to achieve self-reliance in critical defence technologies and systems.
