The Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), on Tuesday, to build a strong, highly efficient smart energy and power system to utilize diversified sources in the clean and renewable energy sector.

The Department of Energy said the partnership aligns with the overall strategy of the energy sector of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the UAE to drive sustainable development through energy transition and to achieve net zero by the year 2050.

The MoU was signed by His Excellency Awaida Murshid Al Marar, chairman of the Department of Energy, and by Xin Baoan, chairman of the board at SGCC, said the state-owned department.

The objective of the newly built partnership is to study decarbonization and upgrade the power system of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the UAE, said the authority. Additionally, enhances demand-side management and network flexibility with cost-benefits.

The department said this collaboration looks to upgrade the domestic power network as well as develop the underground gas-insulated cables and lines project, along with the implementation of smart grids, and adoption of advanced meter infrastructure (AMI).

The MoU encompasses training and capability-building strategies for improved power grid operations, implementing policies and strategies to reduce energy losses on the power grid and related infrastructure, and adopting technologies supporting automation and artificial intelligence, said the Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi.
