Online chatting platform Omegle is shut down due operational failure. Leif Brooks, executive chief of Omegle, in the official website acknowledged the misuse of application, while also sharing his journey from Omegle’s birth to the recent end, as a letter to the website visitors.
Omegle, 14 years old, gained its popularity during corona virus pandemic and was prevalent globally among the teenagers and young adults. The objective behind the application was to connect random strangers from across the globe to socialize.
Also, the platform provided a space for people who are uninterested in a conversation, the freedom to disconnect and switch to a new conversation.
Brooks said he did not expect anything in return while launching Omegle when he was 18 years old. He added, during the course of time, his aim was to lighten feelings of loneliness and isolation. The anonymous video chat is no longer sustainable to continue financially as well as psychologically, said the CEO of the company.
Despite the complications that led to Omegle’s permanent close, the chat service received dedicated user base and was also featured in other popular social media platforms including, Instagram and Tiktok.
A case where a young American accused the platform of randomly pairing her with a pedophile raided concern on the safety and security of the platform, stated Business Today on Thursday.
