Japan to approve chip development project with Taiwan’s TSMC
Japan has approved semiconductor research project with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company ( TSMC ) to develop chip technology worth $338 million.
As the demand grows in the chip manufacturing, Japan wants to cooperate with the Taiwanese company because of the expansion of autonomous driving technology, 5G infrastructure, artificial intelligence and data centres also grows.
The electronic component maker Ibiden co and twenty other Japanese companies will work with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) to develop chip manufacturing technology in Japan.
The total cost of the project will be worth 37 billion yen, with the government paying just over half of that.
The research will focus in particular on tech for 3D chip assembly, allowing the creation of components that are more dense but still small.
Because of Covid-19 the surge in demand for home electronics that use semiconductors has accelerated chip supplies.
Semiconductors are supposed to be an essential part of modern tech from smartphones to games consoles and new cars, and the automobile industry being hit hard by the shortage.
Construction will begin this summer on research facilities at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Tsukuba, near Tokyo, the official said, with the project due to kick off in 2022.
