Lufthansa’s Boeing 777F aircraft has operated it’s first-ever 100% carbon neutral cargo flight, from Frankfurt Germany using only Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The air freight flight and logistics service provider transported goods from Siemens Healthineers AG.
During combustion process in the engine, the only CO2 that is released was previously removed from the atmosphere, using Sustainable Aviation Fuel; the fossil CO2 emissions of a flight with conventional kerosene are completely avoided.
The flight will use a small amount of biofuel which is added to conventional kerosene as a so called drop-in-fuel. This joint venture was organized by cargo transport and logistics firms Lufthansa and DB Schenker.
Both the organizations have signed a joint declaration of work on a “Zero Carbon Emission 2050 Strategy” many environmental groups say using biomass for plane fuel is not a good use of agricultural resources.
Peter Gerber, the CEO of Lufthansa Cargo said
“With this flight we are committed to the increased research and use of SAF so that sufficient quantities of the alternative fuel will be available in the future. In addition to investments in a modern freighter fleet,”
“Our commitment to this CO2-neutral flight also contributes to the United Nations’ “Climate Action” sustainability goal. Because Lufthansa Cargo takes its corporate responsibility very seriously and is actively taking measures to meet this responsibility and relieve the environment.”
To replace half of fossil fuels with biofuels a third of the world’s croplands would need to be taken out of other production says green peace.
Green peace claims with this unprecedented expansion enormous amount of additional forest areas will logged resulting in which will result in exposure and atmospheric release of vast quantities of carbon.
